The road to the campground is gravel and there were some tanker trucks running on it periodically, so try to grab a campsite away from the road. We have a federal lands senior discount card, so the rate was around $7.50 - quite reasonable, considering that a basic hotel room in Moab is around $90 a night. We were camping in our van, so no tent, but the tent area in our campsite looked level. Blissfully quiet (no one was running a generator or partying). The pinyon/juniper trees gave just enough privacy between campsites and it turned out to be my favorite campsite of a longish road trip. I'm so glad we did! Our campsite was pleasant, with a lovely red rock outcrop by a little drainage, and a clean vault toilet across the way. We assumed "high season" was over and had not made a reservation at the park the state park was full and the ranger at the entrance station encouraged us to check out Horsethief Campground. We were in the Moab area on a weekday a few days after Labor Day to go mountain biking at Dead Horse Point State Park. No showers and you need to bring your own water but if you just need a few nights it is totally worth it! And only $15 a night! … There is nice hiking and some bike trails at the campground. Although a bit of a drive to Arches NP and Moab (but still manageable) it was very convenient to explore Canyonlands NP and Dead Horse Point State Park. The pit toilets were clean and conveniently placed. The upper loop is closer to the road but it isn't a busy road so I can't imagine it would be noisy. We were in site #11 in the lower loop (Appaloosa Loop?) away from the road and it was very quiet. There were a mixture of tents, trailers and large RV units in the campground. We have a 17' travel trailer and it fit beautifully. Each site has a space for a tent, picnic table, fire ring and space to park your car. The sites are large with lots of space between each of them. but quite a few people leave early in the morning and since you can't make reservations, arrive early to get a site. I suspect that especially between March-Sept., the campground fills up most nights. We arrived about 10am on a week day and found quite a few sites to choose from. My husband and I have just spent four nights at this BLM campground in mid March of this year.
